Growing up in Mexico, Jonnathan and Anahy (pronounced ‘Ana E’) Cazares would always look to the upstairs patio of a huge white house in the neighborhood. If they were lucky, the bulldogs would be out to bark at them as they passed by.

They were just kids back then. As married adults, they realized they each wanted a bulldog because of the dogs at that white house.

The Cazares moved from their hometown, south of Eagle Pass, when Jonnathan started working at a ranch between Utopia and Sabinal. They lived out there for about five years before moving their family to Sabinal in 2011.

Their shared dream of owning a bulldog came true after they bought their first home. A friend in Mexico gave them Harley. Harley came registered and with all her paperwork.

Anahy wanted to show dogs and Harley would be joining her on the start of the new adventure. During a match in San Antonio, a gentleman approached the Cazares to ask about their beautiful dog. He started to ask them questions about Harley’s pedigree and wondered if they thought about breeding her.

Arriving back in Sabinal, Anahy pulled out Harley’s paperwork and began researching pedigrees. Looking at Harley’s lineage, the word champion appeared for generations! Harley came from a long line of award winning bulldogs. In fact, her bulldog line is one of the top 10 in Bulldog Club of America!

Since that first round of research, the Cazares kept going. They learned about common health issues, visited breeders with good and poor habits, and researched the entire process and costs. A key piece of information was finding Harley’s good temperament was combined with no health issues that could be passed on to future generations.

Since Harley’s first litter in 2019, the Cazares have continued to research and incorporate top care into their practices. Bulldogs are widely considered to be dogs with several health issues. However, the Cazares have found that with careful breeding practices, these issues can be minimized or eliminated. They are one of the top breeders in the use of DNA / Genetic and Orthopedic Foundation for Animals testing.

Their care practices don’t end once a litter is born. At three days old and until they go home to their new families, the Cazares utilize the Badass Breeder Curriculum, a puppy training program, to empower each one for a successful future. The curriculum exposes the puppies to various experiences and tests the temperament of each dog.

The Cazares do not assign a puppy at birth to a new family. Rather, they use the information of the future home life and puppy temperament tests to provide their clients with details about which puppy or puppies would be an appropriate match for to join their family. They do not want the wrong puppy personality, say an assertive puppy who is strongly inclined to snatch a cookie from a toddler’s hand, to go home to a family with small children.

The Cazares also maintain a wait list. Dogs are not bred until their wait list is long enough to support the potential litter size. While on the waiting list, future owners gain access to a private puppy page where the Cazares share information, pictures, and videos of the entire process that takes place for 1-2 litters before their litter arrives.

The transparency and care continues with each puppy when they go home. Each puppy arrives in their new home with a wealth of information, health insurance, support, and a detailed puppy folder of life since birth. The folder provides notes on every notable event such as training notes, veterinarian services, and even bowel movements. Clients’ veterinarians have been astounded at the amount of information provided with the puppies.

The Cazares are working to change the way people think about bulldog breeders from the health testing they utilize to eliminate health issues, to using a training curriculum, and the transparency they provide their clients.

The Cazares see their work as not only building a positive legacy for bulldog breeding but for their family.

“We’re building a legacy for our kids. That’s why we named the business with our name. We want our work to be something for them to be proud of,” said Anahy.
